Stage Left Merlot 2009
Wine: This wine is called Stage Left Merlot as the variety has never been centre stage in the vineyard theatre of McLaren Vale. We are certain that, while still being one of the unsung heroes, our audience will be devoted to our gentle, flavoursome new performer. We suggest drinking Stage Left Merlot with good friends, thespian or not, and hope that it will be enjoyed for its unique interpretation of this beloved Bordeaux variety.
Vintage: The 2009 vintage started off really positive with good, even temperatures and an early drop of rain in December. Hot conditions in January were combated by excellent canopy management before cooler February / March temperatures allowed for a beautiful, even ripening period post veraison. Overall an excellent year showcasing a good balance of ripe fruit and cool climate complexity.
Tasting Note: The 2009 Stage Left has the traits of a stylish Merlot, showing fantastic fruit vibrancy with a smooth, soft finish. The nose jumps out of the glass showcasing blueberries, blackberries, a touch of mint and a lovely pencil oak character that neatly rounds things off. The palate is soft and juicy with sun-ripe plums and an alluring herbaceous leaf complexity. An approachable wine in its youth that will soften with age.
