Over the Top Shiraz

Wine The Over the Top is Pertaringa’s very best Shiraz. Acknowledging the very best site, climate, vines and production techniques with our finest red grape, this Pertaringa Shiraz is named Over the Top to proudly declare our aim to make the finest wine we possibly can. The 2008 Over the Top is blended from the absolute best fruit from Pertaringa’s vineyard and matured in the very best French oak. The Over the Top proudly displays all the qualities of McLaren Vale Shiraz.

Vintage The position and aspect of the Pertaringa vineyards allowed for the near perfect vintage conditions of McLaren Vale to be captured in the 2008 Over the Top. Picking all of our Shiraz in late February / early March meant we were lucky enough to miss the effects of the heatwave that devastated much of the region. At the time of harvest, our beloved Shiraz vines provided us with fruit exploding with flavour and good retention of natural acids and fine fruit tannins. This balance was passed on to the berries due to the cool early summer conditions and the tireless work and good canopy management of the vineyard team.

Tasting Note The final product is vibrant crimson in colour with purple hues followed by a perfumed floral lift on the nose and seductive aromas of bright red fruits including raspberry, cherry and rhubarb. A hint of allspice completes the overture, creating excitement before taking the first sip.

Generously weighted blackberry and dark cherry flood the palate on approach, supported by white pepper spice, liquorice root and savoury undertones of freshly turned earth. The ’Grand Finale’ is delivered with an exceptionally long finish held by fine grained tannins and refreshing acidity. The maturation in predominantly French oak barrels for 22 months adds finesse and sophistication to the wine by lending support to the fruit without dominating it.

We have met our aim to create an elegant Shiraz - a modern interpretation of McLaren Vale with a sense of place and purpose. The structure is sure to provide longevity and will reward you if you can manage to keep your hands off it and give it some further cellaring. However, if you are aiming to drink the wine immediately, we would suggest decanting the Over the Top before serving to optimise the drinking pleasure.
