Two Gentlemens Grenache
Wine Pertaringa’s Two Gentlemens Grenache is a traditional family indulgence but more so, it is a testament to the Hardy and Leask background of producing wines that are to be drunk with food and family. The vineyards that make up Two Gentlemens are planted on the Fleurieu Peninsula between the Southern Ocean and Saint Vincent’s Gulf. The maritime climate is ideal for Grenache grown on own roots in some of the oldest soils on the planet.
Vintage Grenache is one of the very last red varieties to ripen in the area, with the best expression of its flavour when grown in the warm Mediterranean conditions of McLaren Vale. Vintage 2008 provided the perfect opportunity for Grenache to prove its suitability to the region with the hot spell during the growing season barely registering a reaction from these old vines. Grenache has become an increasingly fashionable variety over the last few years, proving what the region has always known. The 2008 is the seventh release of the Two Gents, offering the soft and supple tannin profile we have all grown to love. This wine is made from a single block of vines, showing the consistency that can be produced from a well-selected site planted to the right variety and managed in the sustainable manner that all Pertaringa vineyards are.
Tasting Note The wine exhibits a bright ruby colour with violet hues and, following this visual display, a delicious aromatic spectrum of cherries and strawberries leaps out when you swirl the glass, achieving the purity of fruit that comes when this variety is handled gently. The red fruits mingle with anise and clove spices while being supported by a faint hint of oak. The palate follows a similar line with the natural fruit sweet characters of Grenache being accompanied across the palate by a hint of truffles and earthiness. Soft tannins and refreshing acidity direct the wine to give a long elegant finish. The oak regime is respectful of the fruit with 20 months spent in 15% new French oak, providing a delicate touch to support the fruit-forward nature of this variety; the remainder is matured in older barrels providing the time needed to develop and gain complexity. The inclusion of 20% whole bunches during fermentation in stainless steel adds complexity and interest to the wine.
This medium-bodied wine provides all the charm and charisma you would expect from a Gentleman and is styled to provide you with immediate drinking pleasure. We recommend short- to medium-term cellaring with optimum drinking in the first 5 or 6 years upon its release.
